The first guy I always seek out at a regional event, if he's there, is John Rallo, owner of Ground Control Academy and Binky Jones' trainer. The man is a wealth of knowledge and history on the sport and has the pulse of Maryland MMA (hell, he is Maryland MMA.) Here's what John told me last night about the status of sanctioning in Maryland: 1) Ratification of the rules and regulations for the sport are scheduled to go through April 30; 2) promoters can start applying for dates in mid-June; 3) Rallo is targeting October for the first MMA event (and yes, Rallo will be starting his own promotion); and 4) Rallo is aiming to put that first event at the First Mariner Arena.
I just hope the Maryland State Athletic Commission is smart enough to allow Rallo to actually be the first promoter in the state to put on an MMA event. He'll do it the right way and for what he's done for the sport in Maryland, he deserves it. And, let's not let some boxing promoter who has no clue about the sport put on a crappy card in a ballroom. Just let John do it right. First impressions are everything and he's lived and breathed this sport for so long that the only impression he'll create is a good one. Someone else, I'm not so sure.
